Meet Justice Kyra Harris Bolden
Justice Kyra Harris Bolden is serving in her second year on the Michigan Supreme Court. In her first year, she had the distinct honor of authoring three majority opinions, one unanimous.
A graduate of Southfield Public Schools in Michigan, Justice Bolden received her bachelor’s degree from Grand Valley State University and went on to attend the University of Detroit Mercy School of Law.
After receiving her Juris Doctorate, Justice Bolden became a criminal defense attorney and later, a civil litigation attorney. She then served in the Michigan House of Representatives for two terms wherein she sat on the Judiciary Committee. She crafted and passed five bipartisan bills, that became law, which focused on criminal justice reform and protecting survivors of sexual violence.
Justice Bolden is an active member of her community, serving as a member of the Association of Black Judges of Michigan, Wolverine Bar Association, Straker Bar Association, Oakland County Bar Association and Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.
Justice Bolden has received several awards including the Detroit NAACP’s Ida B. Wells Freedom and Justice Award, Michigan Chronicle’s 2023 Woman of the Year Award, and Crain’s Detroit 40 under 40 Award.
